IEC 60317 magnet wire insulation grades & dimensions
Empirical reference data and dimensional tolerances for enamelled round copper magnet wire according to IEC 60317-0-1. Details conductor nominal diameters ($d_{\text{nom}}$), maximum outer diameters ($d_{\text{max}}$) across Grade 1, Grade 2, and Grade 3 insulation builds, and minimum enamel increase ($v_{\text{min}}$) from ultra-fine gauge ($0.008\text{ mm}$) to standard wire ($1.000\text{ mm}$). For definitions of thermal classes or additional manufacturing standards, consult our main Electromagnetic coil glossary.
Insulation grades & dimensional rules
Insulation build grades define the radial thickness of the enamel coating applied over the bare copper conductor:
- Grade 1 (Single build): Standard thin-film insulation designed for high copper fill factor in space-constrained winding windows.
- Grade 2 (Heavy build): Double-layer enamel coating providing enhanced dielectric strength, mechanical abrasion resistance, and pinhole resistance. Recommended for high-voltage applications or dynamic automated winding processes.
- Grade 3 (Triple build): Extra-heavy insulation build for specialized high-dielectric or harsh thermal stress environments (typically standardized for $d_{\text{nom}} \ge 0.050\text{ mm}$).
The maximum overall wire diameter ($d_{\text{max}}$) including enamel coat for a given nominal bare conductor diameter ($d_{\text{nom}}$) is calculated per IEC standards as:
$$ d_{\text{max}} = d_{\text{nom}} + v_{\text{max}} $$
Where $v_{\text{max}}$ is the maximum allowable enamel increase (build) specified by the grade standard for that diameter range. For conversions between IEC metric wire sizes and North American standards, see the AWG to metric conversion reference.
Minimum dielectric breakdown voltage (IEC 60317 baseline)
Minimum required breakdown voltage at room temperature ($20^\circ\text{C}$) per twist-pair test method (IEC 60851-4):
| Thermal class / enamel type | Grade 1 min breakdown (V) | Grade 2 min breakdown (V) | Grade 3 min breakdown (V) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 155 (Polyurethane / solderable) | 1,000 – 2,400 V | 2,000 – 4,800 V | 3,000 – 7,200 V |
| Class 180 (Polyurethane-nylon / PEI) | 1,200 – 2,800 V | 2,400 – 5,600 V | 3,600 – 8,400 V |
| Class 200 / 220 (Polyamide-imide / PAI) | 1,500 – 3,200 V | 3,000 – 6,400 V | 4,500 – 9,600 V |
Note: Ultra-fine wire diameters ($d_{\text{nom}} < 0.050\text{ mm}$) operate near or below the lower threshold (approx. $300\text{ V} - 800\text{ V}$) due to thin radial insulation limits. Check the Glossary: Dielectric strength section for measurement methodology details.
